Credit Counseling Can Help You Take Control

Before you file for bankruptcy, federal law requires that you receive credit counseling. This may seem like a burden, but you will appreciate it eventually. You will get the opportunity to learn more about budgeting, finance and interest, and you will feel more in control when it comes to managing your expenses in the future.

What Is Credit Counseling?

Credit counseling is one of the steps required by the government before you are allowed to file for bankruptcy. Several agencies are approved by the court to deliver credit counseling services in Charlotte. The counseling is made up of two parts:

  • Credit counseling briefing — This portion of the required counseling lasts about an hour. You will be asked questions such as what brought you to bankruptcy before you are able to file. If people skip this part of the credit counseling, the judge will dismiss your case and you will not be allowed to move forward.
  • Debtor education or financial management education — This portion of counseling is the education required before you get your discharge. This is the longer segment and lasts about three hours. Here, you will learn ideas about saving money and suggestions for staying out of bankruptcy and how to avoid debt accumulation. Completing this segment will allow you to file. You will not be approved without completing this.

A lot of people think this will be burdensome, but they end up finding the counseling useful for their continued efforts to get back on track financially.

Where Can I Complete The Required Credit Counseling?

In most cases, credit counseling is available online and on the phone. If you don't have a computer, your laptop went out or you don't have WiFi at home, you can:

  • Call credit counselors on a cellphone or land line.
  • Go to the library to use a computer.
  • Come to our office in Charlotte and do this credit counseling on the computer.
